The third and final ODI of the 3-match series between India and Australia is set to take place in Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium on Wednesday (March 22). The first game of the series showcased a dominant performance by the hosts but the visitors were ruthless in the next game to take revenge. Rohit Sharma’s Men in Blue were bundled out for just 117 runs with Mitchell Starc taking a five-wicket haul. Later on, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh humiliated the Indian bowling attack as Australia chased their target in just 11 overs with 10 wickets in hand.
It is a must-win game for India as their proud home record is at stake in the third match. Rain is likely to play a major role in Chennai. A change in the batting lineup is expected as Suryakumar Yadav has got out on a duck twice in the series against Mitchell Starc.
If you look to your left from the local train as you enter the Chepauk station, you’ll get a glimpse of a massive MS Dhoni mural in the stadium premises. The venue has had an art-fuelled facelift and the Dhoni mural, painted to the upper reaches of the stands, makes for a towering presence. There’s still nearly two weeks until the stadium is fully engulfed in the yellow of CSK. Before that, India have a challenge in yellow to contend with, as they look to shrug off the pummelling handed to them by Mitchell Starc and Australia in Vizag.
Expectedly on Tuesday (March 21) evening, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav – who got two incredible first balls to deal with from Starc in the series – faced the left-handed throwdown specialist Nuwan Seneviratne in a simulation of the angle that has troubled the entire top-order.
Australia had to contend with the unforgiving afternoon heat in Chennai at practice, with David Warner hitting the nets and giving Steve Smith a big decision to make before the finale. Mitchell Marsh, who had decided to make a slow return to all-round duties, bowled at full tilt too as a relaxed Australian side aim to add a blemish to India’s home record in bilateral series – played 15, won 13 since 2015.
When: India vs Australia, 3rd ODI, March 22, 2023, 1:30 PM IST
Where: MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
What to expect: Rahul Dravid called the wheat brown strip in Chennai a ‘good wicket’ on the eve of the game, which can be code for a batting belter. After a tough Mumbai surface and a poor batting performance in Vizag, the series is perhaps due a big-scoring finale.
A hot, sweltering day is in the offing, with a slight chance of rain but nothing heavy enough to disrupt the game.
Team news:
India: If the team management have workload concerns with a WTC final coming up, Umran Malik could be in for Mohammed Shami. Malik spent a considerable amount of time bowling on Tuesday. Washington Sundar offers variety in finger spin and is a local, but the decision to bring him in for another finger spinner will not be straightforward.
Probable XI: Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma (c), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, KL Rahul (wk), Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami/Umran Malik, Mohammed Siraj
Australia: Nathan Ellis did not have a clue on Warner’s fitness update at the pre-match press conference but the opening batter spent around half an hour taking throwdowns from the support staff in scorching heat. He didn’t look in too much discomfort and even practised running between the wickets. To accommodate him though, Australia will have to put one of their all-rounders on the bench.
Probable XI: Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Marcus Stoinis, Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Mitchell Starc
